USS Hammann DD-412
USS Hammann (DD-412) was a World War II-era Sims-class destroyer in the service of the United States Navy, named after Ensign Charles Hammann, a Medal of Honor recipient from World War I. Hammann was launched by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Kearny, New Jersey on 4 February 1939.
Throughout the war, the destroyer performed security and patrol functions, not particularly different. During the Battle of Midway, he covered the aircraft carrier Yorktown from air attacks. However, the aircraft carrier received two torpedo hits and, listing heavily, was abandoned on the same day, Hamman picked up the survivors. The next morning, efforts were made to rescue the injured carrier. The rescue group was moving forward when, in the afternoon of June 6, the Japanese submarine I-168 broke through the destroyer's protective screen. Four torpedoes were fired; one missed, two passed under Hammann and hit Yorktown, and the fourth hit the middle of the destroyer, breaking it in half.The explosion in the water killed many people, bringing the death toll to 80 people. The survivors were taken aboard the destroyers Benham and Balch.
